paris doesn't want ali michael

"It's hard to imagine Miss Michael, a willowy, 5-foot-9-inch teenager, being told her legs are too fat. Last season, Miss Michael made herself sick keeping her weight down, said her mother. Miss Michael's reward was to be heralded as the next supermodel. "
--Wall Street Journal

Sigh. The rapidly growing story is that Ali Michael, 17 year old model du jour, was sent home from the Fall 08 Paris shows, because she gained five pounds. The only show she walked in over there was the Yohji Yamamoto show. Quite a departure from the Parisian runways she walked in last year, which included Dior, Chanel, Lanvin, Christian Lacroix. It's all sorts of heartwrenching, no matter how omnipresent concave models are. I mean, in the picture at left, look at the Lily Donaldson (I had to look it up on style.com to make sure) in the pink dress next to Ali, leaning over. Ouch.

  2. i really like ali michael and was looking forward to seeing her become big in the future...but i also admire that she doesnt want to adhere to the ridiculous standards of modeling these days and instead stays true to herself.

  4. Unbelievable, really quite shocking. It beggars belief really, there is nothing fat about the girl at all, is fashion getting insane or what, what next walking corpse this is horrendous.

  5. thats insane. She did the right thing by not starving herself though.

    thank you.

  7. I just posted on this too. It's pretty appalling that she was rejected over what was probably a normal teenage growth spurt.

  8. ugh this is disgusting...how tiny do these designers want the girls to be?!?!?

    Lily needs a burger- PRONTO!

I miss the 90s where models looked healthy and had personalities

  9. it sounds like she was rejected for eating, iheartfashion. the comment attributed to her mother in this blurb here says "Miss Michael made herself sick keeping her weight down, said her mother."
so when she ate some food, it showed, and the result was virtual unemployment. i don't know which is more disgusting, the industry attitude, or lily's back in the background.

  10. Dear god, I am SHOCKED. Ali girl is skinny as hell, and so pretty. Plus, it's really not fair, compared to Gemma who has gained way more weight but still walked Chanel for spring 08.

  11. update : I haven't seen Gemma in any F/W 08 shows!!!

  12. urgh that story makes me sick! she is a teenager and growing, she cant malnourish herself, she's still developing!

  13. thats insane. hope she's well and that she's not influenced by the shit somes agancys are talking....

  14. I was so glad to see that Gemma, at 20, had finally filled out a little, and though that the fact that she was still getting work was a positive sign.
But what happened to Ali Michael is sick. It's daft for people to blame models for excessive skinniness/anorexia when it's practically a condition of their work. What kind of daft choice is this- either starvation or virtual unemployment? Good for Ali that she chose the way of sanity- Crystal Renn reported similar problems, something really needs to be done about this..

  15. the situation of models is really annoying, I think they must be thin, but not ill! most of them look like skeletons with sad eyes, I wish we could go back to the '90, when models were really Godness.

  16. This does make me feel a bit sick
I'm fine with models being slim, but healthy slim
    This is just scary

  17. First and foremost, love your blog! Having just recently discovered it as well as getting a TV for the first time in 8 months! (This is going somewhere). Was watching the Tyra Banks America's Top Model show, and most of the girls on there are gorgeous but not runway model material at all. I almost feel sorry for them that this is the industry they want to enter. I think most models start out being gorgeous girls and the industry takes them, tells them to lose fifty pounds and they come out looking like concentration camp vicitims, then they go have a meal and lose a truck load of jobs. What a life!

  18. omg i read about this and i was incomplete disbelieve! she's fat!? then what does that make all the normal people? WHALES? seriously, that got me so upset. she's gorgeous, shes thin, shes fabulous.

  19. Is that really Lily!!?? Ouch, it does really hurt...

in another note, i still think that if you gain 5 pounds and those pounds are well balanced, or even if they're not balanced but they're toned, hey, that's really beautiful.

  20. this is such a surprise, and I thought Ali Michael was going to be the next big thing. it's insane that they could send a girl home just because they've gained 5 pounds. but I guess the modeling industry doesn't make sense.

  21. and when they take drugs to stay thin they´re teared apart by public and media. this is ridiculous.
Ali stay as you are & don´t change a thing!!
